Anal Cancer

Symptoms

• Bleeding or discharge from the anus
• A lump, ulcer or persistent sore that does not heal
• Pain, itching or a feeling of pressure in the anal area
• A change in bowel habit or difficulty controlling the bowels

These symptoms are far more often caused by haemorrhoids or an anal fissure, but they should always be examined rather than assumed.

Screening and surveillance

Anal cancer is closely linked to HPV infection. People at higher risk may be offered regular examination and surveillance so that changes can be found and treated early. HPV disease and other infectious proctological conditions are also a special interest of the practice.

Management

Treatment is planned in a multidisciplinary team and may involve chemoradiotherapy, surgery, or a combination, depending on the stage and location of the disease.
